Assistant District Attorney – Civil Division – PIA Attorney IV

Position – Dallas County Assistant District Attorney – Civil Division – Attorney IV

Duties – Works in the Civil Division PIA Section with one (1) other attorney and four (4) paralegals in the handling of Public Information Act (PIA) requests for Dallas County. This includes PIA requests to the County Clerk and the Tax Assessor.  It also includes PIAs for District Attorney criminal record files.  Prepare legal briefs to the Texas Attorney General’s Office regarding Public Information Act requests.  Complete other projects and works as assigned.

Responsibilities:

  1. Legal Compliance, understand and apply the law regarding what information must be released and what is protected under the PIA.
  2. Work on assigned PIAs: coordinate with departments regarding providing responsive documents, reviewing/redacting documents, assessing legal exceptions to disclosure, conducting necessary legal research on applicable law, preparing cost letters, and preparing documents for release.
  3. Review criminal case files, identify responsive records to PIA, ensure legal compliance for sensitive/confidential information, and liaise with district attorney’s office regarding handling of PIA.
  4. Meet PIA deadlines, including deadlines to submit Attorney General exception letter(s).
  1. Respond to department and requestor communications regarding PIAs.
  1. Advise and train/assist in training paralegals on handling PIA requests, including on applicable law.
  1. Handle third party PIA complaints, including gathering information and drafting assessment. 
  1. Send third party interest letters, where applicable, to persons with an interest in the information the subject of a PIA request.
  1. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications – Current license to practice law in the State of Texas; member in good standing

with the State Bar of Texas; Two (2) years and six (6) months of experience practicing law; and

must pass background check.

Annual Salary Range – $106,837.08 – $128,152.68 (commensurate with qualifications and

experience) plus benefits.
