ASSISTANT DISTRICT ATTORNEY – CRIMINAL

The Angelina County District Attorney’s Office is accepting applications for the position of Assistant District Attorney. The District Attorney’s Office is comprised of seven attorneys, two investigators, six support staff and the opportunity to be assigned to high level cases immediately.

Angelina County is located in Deep East Texas, and is nestled in the Pineywoods. It offers the chance to be close to the city without the traffic or the cost of living. Lufkin is centrally located with easy access to Houston, Dallas, Tyler, and Shreveport. It also offers top education, summer camps, outdoor recreation and robust cultural attractions.

Salary and Benefits

$120,000 – $145,000 annually (commensurate with experience and ability)

Summary

Primarily responsible for competently seeking justice in criminal matters in Angelina County, Texas.

Individuals in the position serve at the pleasure of the current elected official.

Responsibilities

  • Communicates professionally with other staff, community partners, law enforcement, court staff, witnesses, and victims.
  • Performs intake review of cases submitted by law enforcement.
  • Drafts indictments, pleadings, and correspondence.
  • Presents felony cases to the grand jury.
  • Prepares for and appears for jail call, dockets, motion hearings, jury trials, bench trials, and punishment hearings.
  • Formulates plea offers and engages in meaningful plea negotiations with the defense bar.
  • Prepares for bench and jury trials independently and with trial teams, including, but not limited to reviewing evidence, preparing witnesses, preparing exhibits, and identifying any areas of follow-up that may be needed.
  • Conducts thorough research on legal issues and presents arguments that are factually and legally supported.
  • Prepares and responds to appeals.
  • Plans and completes work within set deadlines.
  • Appears for civil proceedings as needed.

Education and Experience

  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience as a licensed attorney.
  • Preferred experience:
    • a minimum of two (2) years handling high level felony offenses from intake through appeal.
    • a minimum of five (5) first chair jury trials.
    • prior responsibility for training and mentoring young prosecutors.
