Pay Range: $118,609.20 – $148,215.36

Position Description

Position Overview:

We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Gang Prosecutor to join our juvenile team. In this specialized role, the successful candidate will be responsible for prosecuting juvenile gang-related cases and ensuring the effective training and mentorship of docket attorneys within the division. The ideal candidate will have trial experience in gang prosecutions, including homicide prosecutions and complex litigation.  The ideal candidate will have knowledge of or a strong willingness to learn juvenile law, including determinate sentences and certification processes.

Key Responsibilities:

Juvenile Gang Prosecution Duties:

  • Lead the prosecution of juvenile gang-related criminal cases, including offenses such as homicide, aggravated robbery, and other crimes associated with criminal organizations.
  • Represent the state in hearings, pre-trial motions, and trials, ensuring the rights of the juvenile respondents and victims are protected, while effectively pursuing justice.
  • Understand and apply juvenile laws to the prosecution of gang affiliated offenses, including indeterminate resolutions, determinate sentences, and juvenile certifications.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement agencies, probation officers, and social service providers to resolve cases involving juvenile offenders and gangs.
  • Develop strategies for investigating gang activity and prevention within the juvenile population and working with law enforcement on juvenile-specific approaches.
  • Stay current on legal precedents, legislative changes, and evolving policies concerning juvenile gang offenses and juvenile justice reform.

Additional Duties:

  • Engage in community outreach and education on juvenile gang activity, prevention, and intervention strategies, particularly for youth and families in at-risk communities.
  • Serve as a resource within the office on juvenile gang cases and criminal justice policies related to juveniles.
  • Assist in writing legal briefs, case summaries, and reports on juvenile gang-related cases, including updates to relevant law enforcement and community stakeholders.
  • Represent the office at conferences, training events, and public forums related to juvenile gang prosecution and juvenile justice issues and informing the Division.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and admission to practice law in Texas.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience prosecuting criminal cases, with at least 2 years focused on gang-related, juvenile justice, or both.
  • Proven experience handling gang-related criminal cases, including those involving violent crimes.
  • Excellent trial advocacy skills, with a strong understanding of the unique considerations in prosecuting juveniles.
  • Strong writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with law enforcement, probation officers, juvenile court systems, and other community partners.
