Special Assignment Attorney/Special Assistant U.S. Attorney

The Kendall County Criminal District Attorney’s office is a small to mid-sized office with jurisdiction over felony and misdemeanor criminal cases. We are located in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, with nearby access to San Antonio. Summary

This is a grant-funded position that is intended to strengthen investigative and prosecutorial capacity, expand intergovernmental coordination, and enhance the ability of jurisdictions to investigate and prosecute fraud and other crimes committed by aliens within the United States, as well as investigate and prosecute drug and human trafficking crimes.

This position is for a full-time criminal prosecutor specially assigned as a Special Assistant United States Attorney (SAUSA) within the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas located in San Antonio. The position will be an employee of Kendall County under the general supervision of the elected Criminal District Attorney but will be located and work at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in San Antonio under the daily supervision of that office. The SAUSA will be assigned fraud and other criminal cases committed by aliens within the United States and will investigate and prosecute crimes involving drug or human trafficking committed within the United States. The position is a grant funded through May 31, 2029.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Duties are assigned by the Criminal District Attorney and the First Assistant to include the following:

  • Investigate and prosecute federal criminal cases in U.S. District Court.
  • Collaborate with federal law enforcement agencies in developing criminal investigative strategies and enforcement initiatives
  • Conduct legal research, prepare pleadings, motions, briefs, and other legal documents.
  • Present evidence before grand juries and represent the United States during hearings, trials, sentencings, and appeals
  • Evaluate evidence, interview witnesses, negotiate resolutions when appropriate, and develop prosecutorial recommendations.
  • Handles cases involving illegal immigration, drug trafficking, human trafficking, firearms trafficking, human smuggling, transnational organized crime, and activities involving international criminal organizations and drug cartels.
  • Manage cases of varying complexity from initiation through final resolution
  • Uphold the highest standards of ethics, professionalism, and public service.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. May be assigned, as needed, to any other aspects of criminal prosecution, or other statutory and constitutional duties required of the Criminal District Attorney’s Office.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a four-year college or university AND Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited school of law.
  • Active membership in good standing with the bar of any U.S. Jurisdiction
  • Minimum of one year of post J.D. legal or other relevant professional experience
  • United States citizenship
  • Ability to successfully complete a background investigation, credit and tax review, fingerprinting, and drug screening.

You can qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both
You can qualify with fewer years of experience IF YOU obtained SIGNIFICANTLY MORE relevant experience in criminal prosecution, such as number or types of trials, than one would typically receive within a similar time frame  

Conditions of Employment

  • Must reside in the Western District of Texas or within 25 miles thereof.
  • Occasional travel may be required.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume; Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
