Recent milestones of note

Appointments

David Broom, formerly an assistant district attorney in Cherokee County, was appointed by Governor Greg Abbott as the District Attorney for that office. Mr. Broom earned his J.D. from the University of North Texas at Dallas College of Law. His term will expire December 31, 2026 or until a successor shall be elected and qualified.

Kenneth Strawn was sworn in as the County Attorney in Henderson County in late March after winning the primary and having no Democratic challenger in the November general election. He brings 18 years of legal experience to the role, including 15 years as a prosecutor and three as a public defender. He was recently an assistant county attorney in the same office to which he was elected. Mr. Strawn earned his J.D. from the University of Nebraska College of Law.

Abbie Kamin was appointed County Attorney in Harris County by the commissioners court, effective June 15. She succeeded Jonathan Fombonne in the position and is the first woman to hold the office in county history. Kamin is a civil rights and general civil attorney with experience in voting rights, civil rights litigation, and constitutional issues. She graduated from American University Washington College of Law in Washington D.C.

Michael Ferry, an assistant criminal district attorney in Tarrant County, was appointed to the 213th Judicial District Court in early May by Governor Abbott. His term will expire December 31 or until a successor shall be elected and qualified.

Awards

Matt Foye, an assistant district attorney in Travis County, was honored with the Texas Impaired Driving Safety Award. It celebrates and encourages those individuals who go above and beyond to eliminate impaired driving in Texas. The award is given by the Texas Impaired Driving Task Force.

Jessica Escue, an assistant district attorney in Brazos County, received the Visionary Voice Award, which was presented by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center. She was honored for her innovative leadership and commitment to ending sexual violence.

Deaths

Scott Cornuaud, County Attorney in Hunt County, passed away in late March. His first assistant, Wiley Hollopeter, will serve as the acting county attorney until a successor can be appointed.

Bob Etlinger, a retired assistant county attorney in Guadalupe County, passed away in early April He graduated from St. Mary’s University School of Law and  worked at the CDA’s Office in Bexar County before joining the County Attorney’s Office in Guadalupe County. He served there for 22 years before retiring.
